Local Recommendations
Hungry? *Most places in town will have varying hours by season. Below is a list of local options located within a few minutes of Cigar Mountain House. Please see the guest book for more specific information or find our friends on Instagram or Facebook for current status.
Breakfast & Brunch: Venga café never disappoints and is our favorite pick! It is located at 45 Kempf Rd. It is open 7am-5pm. Vegan and vegetarian options are available as well as to-go style options that make it convenient to take with you on your adventures. Check out the art while you are there and enjoy the AC and comfort. They also sell a variety of supplies for adventures and souvenirs.
La Posada Milagro is located in the Ghost Town, and Big Bend Motor Inn Café (Breakfast and lunch) is located inside the gas station in Study Butte- open 7 days a week.
Lunch & Dinner: The historic Starlight Theater is a very neat place to have dinner. You can enjoy gorgeous views and meet the locals on the porch or shop for souvenirs next door at the Terlingua Trading Post while you are there. It is located in the historic Ghost town and opens at 5pm. (Dinner only)
Long Draw Pizza is located a few miles west on FM 170- open 6 days a week for dinner, with lunch served on the weekends. The Chili Pepper Café (Breakfast, lunch and dinner) is open 7 days a week from 8am-9pm and is located in Study Butte next to the bank. Taqueria El Milagro (Dinner only) is located at 210 Ivey Rd. High Sierra Bar and Grill is located in the ghost town and is open 7 days a week 12pm -2 am. DB’S Rustic Iron BBQ is located in the ghost town and has varying hours of operation. Lajitas Golf resort has a variety of dining options available including 2 restaurants and lunch items inside the general store.
*Pro tip- If you see a woman anywhere in town selling tamales, BUY THEM! You will not regret it.
Sweet treats: Milky Way Treats food trailer is currently located in the ghost town next to the Boathouse bar. Hours vary so check their Instagram page for the most current information.
Cocktails: The Boathouse which often hosts live music as well.
Shot Time Liquors will keep you well stocked here at home during your stay.
Shopping: We have one grocery store- The Cottonwood General Store. They have a wide variety of items you may need and are located in Study Butte on HWY 118.
Venga café, The Terlingua Trading Post, Chisos Mining Company, Big Bend Art Studio, Many Stones rock shop, Gallery Chisos, Quilts by Marguerite, Desert Sports, are all local shopping options.
Services: Fuels stations include Alon Gas in Study Butte, Lajitas General Store in Lajitas, Panther Junction Service Station located centrally inside Big Bend National Park, Rio Grande Village Service Station located near Boquillas Canyon inside the National Park as well.
The Post Office is located on HWY 118 and is where you will want to drop off your postcards.
The only bank is called Quicksilver Branch of the West Texas National Bank. They have 1 of the only 2 ATM’s in the area. They are located on HWY 170 in Study Butte.
Terlingua Auto is one of the very few places to get car problems solved. They are located just off HWY 170 in Study Butte. The only other option is Ginchy Gas House. If you need a tire repair (which is common!) Diego’s Tire Repair can help you out.
We also have a hardware store for any needs you may have. Wright Hardware Company is located at the edge of Study Butte on HWY 118.
Things to do: Explore Big Bend National Park and all the amazing places she has to offer. Visit the main visitor center at Panther Junction for maps and more information or the website. Hike the many trails (take extra water and start early!) Visit the historic sites. Climb into a different world and see the views from the Chisos Mountains. Stare in awe at the massive Santa Elena Canyon as you hike into it. Visit Boquillas, a quaint little border town just inside Mexico. (Passport required) or hike into Boquillas Canyon. Learn about the dinosaurs that once roamed here at the dino exhibit. Soak in the natural hot springs at the edge of the Rio Grande, and look for the pictographs and petroglyphs on the short hike there. Don’t forget to get your kiddos an official Junior Ranger badge!
